AIA Bhd, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme AIA Touching Lives, sought to improve the lives of underprivileged children born with heart defects and cleft lips/palate back in 2013. Recently, CSR Malaysia gets in touch with AIA on its Touching Lives programme that focuses on healthy living with an emphasis on activation and programmes that help the community to better and healthier lives; reflecting the importance AIA places on contributing to the sustainability and well-being of the communities it serves.

This year, in conjunction with World Heart Day and World Smile Day, AIA reaffirmed its commitment towards the two causes and raised RM170,000 through its annual Charity Bazaar ran entirely by its employees.

AnushaThavarajah, Chief Executive Officer of AIA said, “AIA Touching Lives was born out of the desire to encourage our employees to connect with the community and understand what life is like for those around us, so we never lose sight of the reason we exist as a life insurer. What better way to bring this to life than to help underprivileged kids born with heart defects and cleft lip/palate undergo corrective surgeries so that they can go on to normal lives.”

Of the total funds raised at the event, RM100,000 was pledged immediately to help six children scheduled to undergo corrective heart surgeries, while RM50,000 was allocated to the Cleft Lip and Palate Association of Malaysia (CLAPAM), which collaborates with the company to highlight cases of children with cleft in need of financial assistance.

ZainalAzhar Ahmad, Chairman of CLAPAM explained the significance of the collaboration, “One in every 700 births in Malaysia is affected with cleft lip/palate. It is the fourth most common birth condition globally. This is a serious healthcondition plaguing infants and children, which if left untreated, can lead to further physical and emotional trauma. AIA’s Touching Lives Fund makes a real difference in the lives of these children and their families, by providing them with an opportunity to correct this defect, and go on to lead normal lives,” he said.

During the Charity Bazaar, AIA employees set up over 15 booths and selling a variety of items including food, desserts and snacks, home appliances, travel accessories, games as well as services such as a foot massage and spa treatments.
