Flavor, Flour and Fun Fused by Great Eastern and Young Chefs Academy

Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad organized a half-day baking class for 30 underprivileged children between the ages of 8 and 12 at Young Chefs Academy recently.

The activity was organized as part of ChildrenCare, the company’s long-term corporate social responsibility (CSR) project and aims to provide the children with an opportunity to explore their artistic and culinary talents through a fun activity. The class was specially conducted by celebrity chef, Brian Chen or better known as Abang Brian who is known for his charm with children.

Children learned how to make the miniature ‘Ji Dan Gao’ or Chinese Marble Sponge cake. The children were divided into six different teams and each team was given their own set of baking utensils. The teams were taught the essentials of baking cakes such as measurements, mixing techniques and temperature control.

Great Eastern Life’s Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dato Koh Yaw Hui said, “As part of the personal development of these children, it is important that we encourage them to express themselves in a creative art form and nurture their imagination.”

Celebrity chef Brian Chen from Young Chefs Academy said, “Cooking with the children was a humbling experience. We connected through the universal language that is food.”

While the children waited eagerly for their cakes to bake, they were treated to an art and craft session where they decorated their own cake boxes. Chloe Ooi, aged 7, from House of Joy said, “I had so much fun learning how to bake my very own cake. I cannot wait to show all my friends what I learned today. Abang Brian is such a great chef and I want to be like him when I grow up.”
