More often than not, reaching out and taking someone’s hand is the beginning of a wonderful journey. It is believed that when we take the first step to help others, our boundaries are enlarged, people are engaged and a ripple effect is created. So does the initiative of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) that reaches out to the underprivileged through its signature CSR Programme ‘Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS’. In this issue, CSR Malaysia gets to check out PETRONAS’ latest engagement programme.
Ever since its establishment in 1974, PETRONAS, being Malaysia’s leading international petroleum corporation, has been sourcing, producing and delivering products to meet society’s growing energy needs while playing the role of a custodian for Malaysia’s national reserves. Throughout its rapidly expanding network, PETRONAS is constantly finding new ways to reinforce its responsibility to the environment and communities where they operate in. Thus, its signature CSR Programme, "Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS" was launched in 2005. The CSR programme aims to reach out to the less fortunate during festive seasons throughout the year as well as to nurture the spirit of giving and volunteerism among PETRONAS' employees and affiliates, providing them with a platform to engage and interact with members of the communities by contributing their time, skills and experience.
Since its launch, the programme joined the stable of PETRONAS' sustainable signature CSR programmes designed and implemented to benefit the less fortunate communities wherever it operates as part of its larger CSR commitment. This year, "Sentuhan Kasih PETRONAS" engagement programme is with the boys and girls who are currently residing at the Monfort Boys Town Institution in Shah Alam held in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration.
Some 380 boys and girls were enlightened with tips on expressing their emotions through arts and creativity at an Art Therapy Workshop and an inspirational talk by PETRONAS Moto3 Rider, Ramdan Rosli. A briefing on road safety awareness was also conducted by the Cub Prix team.
PETRONAS' Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Liz Kamaruddin was happy that the programme was able to bring smiles to the students and gave PETRONAS the opportunity to share meaningful moments with them. She also said that Ramdan's session would inspire and leave a profound impression on the students, thus motivating them to become successful individuals and contribute to the nation.
In addition to the CSR programme, PETRONAS also launched its Deepavali television commercial (TVC) and webfilm, The Light Within, which revolves around social cohesion, hope and optimism. The theme of PETRONAS' festive storytelling for 2014 was clearly portrayed through the story of an old man who spends the day with a seven-year old boy. The TVC, with its heartfelt messages, aims to inspire the students and Malaysians at large to find the good in themselves and ultimately be good to others.
At the same programme, PETRONAS presented a contribution of RM50,000 to the school to purchase computer equipment for their Computer Maintenance training syllabus – a training that teaches students how to repair and maintain electronic gadgets like computers, smart phones and tablets.
The Monfort Boys Town has been providing residential care, general education as well as industrial training skills to orphans and the underprivileged students for the past 55 years. These significant contribution made by the school has helped countless students gain employment and become good citizens.
