The activist is not the man who says the river is dirty. The activist is the man who cleans up the river. There is no doubt about Berjaya Starbuck Coffee Company Sdn Bhd’s (Starbucks) understanding of the natural world and how it can make it a better place for all. In this issue, CSR Malaysia looks at Starbucks’s second Community Edible Garden for Setia Alam Residents. Aside from its commitment to offer the world’s finest coffee while enriching the lives of Malaysians, Starbucks has launched its second Community Edible Garden for Setia Alam Residents. In collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Laman magazine, the Community Edible Garden involves 55 Setia Alam residents, 45 Starbucks partners (employees) and 10 Department of Agriculture staff at Starbucks Drive-Thru Setia Alam, Selangor.
Needless to say, it was a fun community service project that addresses the local community needs and uniting Starbucks partners, Setia Alam residents, the staff of the Department of Agriculture and members of the media. Dato’ Ahmad Zakaria Bin Mohamad Sidek, Deputy Director of Agriculture and Tuan Haji Mohd Yunus Bin Ismail, Director of Urban Agriculture also took part in the project.
Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company’s Public Affairs and Digital Strategy Senior Manager, Salleharon Ahmad notes that Starbucks is committed to enrich the community or neighborhood they are in and also thanked the Department of Agriculture for collaborating with Starbucks to develop Community Edible Gardens. Tuan Haji Mohd Yunus Bin Ismail, Director of Urban Agriculture said that the Department of Agriculture is more than happy to assist Starbucks in developing the Community Edible Garden, and he believes that everyone can own an edible garden regardless of whether they are living in a landed property or in a condominium. Tuan Haji Mohd Yunus also took the opportunity to commend Starbucks for its ingenuity in gathering the community to develop the edible garden.
“Starbucks encourages human connection either over a cup of coffee or during a community activity. This Community Edible Garden serves as a platform for human connection between our partners and the community. We are dedicated to make a difference in where we do business,” adds Salleharon.
The first Starbucks Community Edible Garden was launched at the Starbucks Drive-Thru Kota Kemuning Shah Alam, Selangor. It was the launch event for Global Month of Service (GMoS) – an annual initiative that is practised at all Starbucks worldwide throughout the month of April. During the Global Month of Service, Starbucks organizes on-going community service projects that take place simultaneously around the world; where partners and customers dedicate their time and energy to create a positive change in their local neighborhoods, from tree planting to book drives at orphanage homes. Starbucks has been extending a helping hand to all communities around the world for more than 40 years.
