Initiatives sees a ‘Corner of Hope’ set up in three Malaysian orphanages
Taobao Marketplace, the popular online shopping platform under Alibaba Group, in collaboration with Lumahgo New Retail Sdn Bhd and Newbie Solution Sdn Bhd, today announced the completion of their community initiative at three Malaysian orphanages. Named “Corner of Hope”, the initiative was carried out in line with Alibaba’s 2019.11.11 Global Shopping Festival theme “Every Single Wish Counts”, with the aim of giving children refreshed, inspiring spaces in time for the Lunar New Year.
The joint initiative involved renovating a section of the orphanages – Rumah K.I.D.S, Rumah Sayangan, and Rumah Charis – Home for the Children – and providing basic necessities, functional items and brand new, customised furniture and books. Combined, the orphanages are home to over 60 children aged between five and 18.
“This small gesture is aimed at bringing joy and making the New Year more memorable for these children. We really hope the revamped spaces will provide them a more conducive environment for their enjoyment and development of creativity and enthusiasm for learning,” said Jess Lew, Marketing Manager of Tmall World Malaysia, the team under Alibaba Group that spearheaded this project.
“Bringing a smile to them by making a difference to their homes was absolutely worthwhile. Providing these kids with necessary furniture and books, and renovating their homes was our way of making a small contribution to help them fulfil their dreams,” said Fabian Kong, Chief Executive Officer of Lumahgo New Retail Sdn Bhd.
For the Rumah K.I.D.S orphanage, in particular, Taobao and Lumahgo sponsored a brand-new playing area for infants and toddlers at their new branch in Taman Gembira, Klang.
Before: As a new setup, the Rumah K.I.D.S home was in need for a makeover that transforms unutilized space inside the home into a play area, making it lively and appealing for kids.
After: The home was redesigned to include a play area and was equipped with new toys and furniture for the children. The space was also refurbished with play mats and wallpapers for a safer and joyful environment. The specially painted blackboard wall added a nice touch to the space, insipiring children to draw and express their feelings.
“The makeover has indeed brightened the home and given it a more cheerful interior. Our children now have a space where they can enjoy playing, living and being themselves. We are grateful to Taobao and other sponsors for doing this for us,” said David Janssen, the Communications Manager of Rumah K.I.D.S.
Over at Rumah Sayangan, the “Corner of Hope” was refurbished with a warmer colour palette, complete with new bean bags, a carpet and bookshelves filled with new books to encourage a love for reading and learning.
Before: The study area in Rumah Sayangan, Cheras, lacked adequate storage space for books and looked very dim for a study area.
After: The room was given a complete makeover to provide a better sense of space and reduce clutter. It was also equipped with new bean bags, a book shelf and useful study materials to encourage children to read and learn more.
“Thank you, Taobao. The transformation was amazing, with the colours and furniture giving a more homey and cosy ambience to the space. The children have been excited to spend their time reading and learning more in the new ‘Corner of Hope’. Keep up the good work, you wonderful people. God bless you all,” said Susan Looi, the Founder of Rumah Sayangan.
Last but not least, the girls at Rumah Charis – Home for the Children received a pleasant surprise when their rooms were refurbished with new furniture and curtains, allowing them to have tidier storage spaces and cosy bedrooms.
Before: This bedroom in Rumah Charis, Taman Lucky, was in need for a better storage facility and was due for a fresh coat of paint. The kids staying at the home also wanted a grooming table setup for their use.
After: Newly installed curtains, a brand new grooming table, a bed with adequate storage space now unifies the living and leisure area for the kids in Rumah Charis, Taman Lucky.
“We believe that in order for children to prosper, they must first be in an environment that offers comfort and peace of mind. We thank Taobao and other sponsors for enabling this by setting up a ‘Corner of Hope’ in our homes,” said Jackson Pau, Home Coordinator of Rumah Charis.
One of the girls from the home, Julian Lim Chuan Hui, aged 18, said that she was overjoyed to have new furniture and bedding to celebrate the New Year with her friends. “I now have more space for my new clothing too!” she added.
