At the recent CSR Malaysia Awards 2019 luncheon event, outstanding Malaysian corporations that have excelled tremendously in the corporate sustainability and social responsibility arena in boosting the socio-economic transformation of Malaysia were honoured. The event served as a platform to celebrate outstanding achievers and inspiring corporations for their efforts to create a better Malaysia through their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. The recipients of these awards have been selected by a panel of high caliber judges representing corporate and social bodies.

50 Malaysian listed and private companies together with GLCs were honored, recognized and awarded for going the extra mile to reach out to needy communities and to engage in sustainability endeavours in efforts to create a better Malaysia.

Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, a social activist and the Chairman of NIOSH was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding community work.

The judging Criteria for the CSR Malaysia Awards are as follows:

1. Clear purpose and goals of the company for the CSR initiative
2. The impact created / the significance of the CSR initiative
3. Frequency of CSR events held
4. Total amount of contributions given
5. Transparency in reporting CSR initiatives
6. Creative implementation of the CSR activities
7. Strength of the CSR team
8. Sincerity and the effectiveness of each initiative

More often than not, the focus on recognition for CSR excellence has not been sufficient. It must be remembered that private sector companies are the driving force of the nation’s economy and they are well placed to carry out meaningful and significant CSR activities. Receiving the CSR Malaysia Awards from Yang Berhormat Puan Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development was very relevant and appropriate as the Government and the Ministry will be able to take note of the individuals and corporations that champion Social Responsibility initiatives. Also present at the event was the CSR Malaysia’s Chairman Dato’ R. Rajendran and its Co-Chairman/ Managing Editor Lee Seng Chee.

The event was organized by ‘CSR Malaysia’, an initiative of Pertubuhan Amal Tanggungjawab Kemapanan Dan Korporat Malaysia.

Corporate Malaysia’s aspirations go beyond mere profits or building world class buildings or infrastructures. These caring organizations promote sustainable economies by helping marginalized communities and making environmental efforts to preserve our heritage for future generations. The event not only celebrated the CSR achievements of these outstanding corporations but also served as a source of inspiration for other corporations to emulate them.

The event also featured a CSR Carnival whereby some 20 NGOs showcased their initiatives, giving the public a good insight into what they do for the community.

The event, which was attended by some 450 corporate personalities and foreign dignitaries, was supported by Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

Impacting Communities, Improving Lives

There is more to Starbucks Malaysia than meets the eye. While they have been making waves throughout the country as a popular coffee chain, this corporation also doubles as a platform that strengthens the bond with the community and encourages good deeds for the environment. Recently, CSR Malaysia speaks to Sydney Quays, the Managing Director of Starbucks Malaysia along with Rina Siew, its Corporate Social Responsibility Manager on their noble efforts aimed to benefit the people and the planet.

Great Eastern Life Children Care Organised Raya Baking Workshop for Underprivileged Children

Through its corporate social responsibility initiative, ChildrenCare, Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad (GELM) continued the spirit of Syawal by organising a baking class, termed the ‘Sunny Lebaran Baking Workshop’, for almost 40 underprivileged children from Rumah Amal Cahaya Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Pusat Jagaan Pertubuhan Pendidikan Anak-Anak Yatim Selangor (Rumah Bakti), and Pusat Jagaan Nuri. Aligned with the Personal Development pillar of ChildrenCare, the two-hour programme aimed at encouraging the children to explore their artistic and culinary talents through the proper craft and techniques of cookie-baking. Incorporating a mini baking competition as part of the programme, the kitchen was filled with laughter and cheer as the children, aged 10 to 17, demonstrated their creativity and camaraderie. They were then treated to a wholesome Raya buffet lunch and to conclude the programme, GELM made sure they did not return home empty-handed with each kid receiving a Raya giftbag. To further the Raya cheer, GELM also made a donation of gift vouchers worth RM12,500 to five other homes registered under Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat.

KDYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong visits RHB Art with Heart 2019 exhibition at BSC

Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah accompanied by her daughter, Tengku Puteri Jihan Azizah ‘Athiyatullah visited RHB Art With Heart Exhibition at Bangsar Shopping Centre today. The exhibition tour was led by Dato’ Khairussaleh Ramli, Group Managing Director of RHB Banking Group. Themed “Diversity & Inclusivity”, AWH 2019 provides local artists with a platform to showcase their works. The exhibition underlines RHB’s commitment towards nurturing talents in Malaysia’s art scene. Three paintings by Tengku Puteri Jihan Azizah ‘Athiyatullah were also featured.

Techkem Group Celebrates Hari Raya-Gawai with Residents of Rumah Renang, Sarawak

In conjunction with the Hari Raya-Gawai 2019 festive season, Techkem Group has sponsored and organized a CSR program at Rumah Renang, Sarawak to celebrate the occasion with the residents. The Balingian state assemblyman YB Abdul Yakub Bin Haji Arbi was invited as the guest of honor during the event. Almost 60 people were present during the event including the Operations Director of Techkem Group, Dr. Chew Chun Ming and chief of the longhouse, Renang Ak Nayor. Contributions from Techkem Group were presented to the residents during the program.

Residents of Rumah Renang longhouse at Balingian, Sarawak has been living without electricity from the national grid and clean piped water supply for decades due to its isolated location. In March 2018 with the support from YB Abdul Yakub, Techkem Group has initiated a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project for the longhouse residents. Led by Dr. Chew the Renewable Energy Water Refine Technology (REWART) system has been successfully installed at the site to provide clean drinking water and electricity supply by harnessing solar energy. Through this CSR project, the residents of Rumah Renang are now able to enjoy clean water from the tap and electricity generated from solar photovoltaic panels to light up their longhouse at night.

Renang has expressed his gratitude to Techkem Group for the generous donation. This project has received technical support from F Cubed, Australia which manufactures the Carocell distillation unit solar panels. On March 2019, Techkem Group celebrated the 1st year anniversary of this CSR project at Rumah Renang. The group represented by Dr. Chew has presented a token of appreciation to Mr. Renang for taking good care of the REWART system.

Techkem Group hopes that such contributions could alleviate some of the hardship endured by these underprivileged residents of Rumah Renang living under conditions lacking behind in facilities. Techkem Group shall continue to maintain and look after the REWART system for the welfare of the residents.

FedEx Malaysia’s Great Support for Urban Poor Communities

FedEx volunteers join the Food Aid Foundation at Enggang Apartment which aimed to help the Enggang community and two other locations embrace urban farming

As part of its commitment to help foster community empowerment, more than 200 FedEx Express team members participated in two separate FedEx Cares activities in Malaysia recently. The initiatives were held in collaboration with the Food Aid Foundation and INTI International University & Colleges to help address the issues of food security in the underprivileged community at Enggang Apartment in Puchong and education inequality, respectively.

FedEx collaborated with Food Aid Foundation to help cultivate urban farms for the underserved community at Enggang Apartment in Puchong. The programme aims at equippping residents with the necessary tools, resources and knowledge to initiate sustainable food production, therefore easing both their financial and food security problems. Similar urban farm initiatives were also started in two other locations – at the Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang in Penang and Rumah Warga Emas Nur Ehsan in Johor Bahru, for a total of 1,800 sq. ft. of allocated land.

The volunteers participated in the urban farming initiative by setting up farming plots. Together with Food Aid Foundation and the community, FedEx volunteers cleared the allocated areas, built raised garden beds and ponds, greenhouses as well as assembled vertical farming platforms. In addition, FedEx also provided financial support for the purchase of crop supplies, such as seeds, soil, nutri-pots, garden beds, equipment and groceries. FedEx and Food Aid Foundation will also be working with the State Agriculture Department to select suitable crops for the targeted communities.

FedEx and INTI volunteers hold a series of workshops over two months at Enggang Apartment to cultivate a habit of learning among children

As part of FedEx Cares, FedEx also collaborated with INTI to provide educational lessons for children at Enggang Apartment over a two-month period. The collaboration with INTI  saw engaging sessions with children, which included lessons in Bahasa Malaysia, English and mathematics as well as various outdoor activities and games to promote soft skills such as teamwork and verbal communication.
