Reading is an aspect associated with literacy. However, the reading process is not simple in its nature. It does not merely involve recognizing a single character and pronouncing it correctly or to recognize and pronounce a few characters that are arranged in particular manner, but more importantly it is the ability to understand the meaning of these arrangements. In spite of government initiative to inculcate reading habits, not very much known about how much students read and what they read.
STM Lottery understands the vital role that education plays in building a sustainable future and is delighted to continue the commencement of the 2024 edition of its Sports Toto “Reading My Companion” programme.
“Beginning its 11th year, STM Lottery’s ‘Reading My Companion’ Reading Programme represents a significant milestone for the company,” stated Mr. Giam Say Khoon, Deputy General Manager (Communications & Sustainability) of STM Lottery. “Reaching this milestone underscores our commitment to promoting literacy and empowering young minds. Over the years, we’ve seen the impact of nurturing the love for reading among children in rural areas.” This initiative aims to instil the habit of reading among students who have limited recreational opportunities in rural settings and at the same time spreading the joy of reading to 1,374 pupils from 10 micro-sized Chinese primary schools in the rural areas of Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Johor.
“By promoting reading as a favourite pastime and igniting a passion for reading, we believe we can inspire pupils to excel academically and unlock their full potential.”
Beginning July 23, 2024 STM Lottery staff volunteers have been visiting 10 participating schools to present pupils with carefully selected storybooks and donating interesting storybooks to the libraries of each participating school. The programme also featured engaging storytelling sessions aimed at making reading a lively and interactive experience.
In addition, the participating schools will play an integral role in cultivating a reading community among their pupils by promoting book exchanges, urging kids to share stories in class and express their thoughts and reflections in personal journals.
This collaborative approach not only enhances the joy of reading but also encourages the development of critical thinking and self-expression skills.
In recognition of pupils’ enthusiasm and dedication, the company arranged tokens of commendation for two pupils from each participating school.

“By bringing the storybooks to these deserving pupils, the reading programme will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark, empowering them with the tools and inspiration to unlimited possibilities.”
Initiated by STM Lottery in 2012, the programme has so far benefited over 18,800 students in 173 sub-urban schools across several states. STM Lottery recognises the pivotal role of education in shaping a sustainable future and is proud to support this cause through its corporate social responsibility efforts.
