Combating Climate Change and Promoting Environmental Sustainability

Jul 22, 2024 | CSR Stories

While our primary focus remains on pioneering innovative therapies to transform the healthcare landscape, we are equally dedicated to upholding the well-being of our planet, our workforce, and the communities we serve. Our business ethos underscores a conscientious approach that interweaves social responsibility into all aspects of our operations, supported by robust Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. To reduce our environmental impact, we have proactively adopted strategies to accelerate our shift towards renewable energy sources, implemented recycling programmes for water and waste, and embraced sustainable procurement practices.

As a company committed to environmental stewardship, we transcend mere regulatory compliance by championing responsible business conduct that emphasises the sustainable utilisation of natural resources. At Biocon Sdn. Bhd., we recognise the importance of evaluating and addressing climate-related challenges and opportunities inherent in our operations. We have launched various initiatives to combat climate change and advance environmental sustainability.

Decarbonisation Strategy

At Biocon Sdn. Bhd., several initiatives have been implemented, such as installing aerodynamic fans in cooling towers to reduce power consumption by almost 20% and progressively installing rooftop solar panels. These efforts are projected to yield monthly greenhouse gas (GHG) savings of 1.6 tCO2e. Moreover, throughout the year, we prioritised sea-based freight instead of airfreight for the global transportation of our products.

In an attempt to further reduce pollution emitted from non-renewable sources of energy through power reduction projects, Biocon Sdn. Bhd. has initiated the substitution of almost 50% of our compact fluorescent lamps (CFL bulbs) with light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. At common locations such as corridors, we have installed motion-based sensor lighting to further reduce our consumption.

Water Management Strategy

Scaleban technology implementation has helped us achieve a recycle rate of almost 500 m3 of water per day, significantly reducing freshwater intake. We are piloting a rainwater harvesting system with a harvesting capacity of 25,000 litres of rainwater, which will further reduce the demand on municipal water for non-potable use.

Circular Economy Strategy

We have introduced reusable technology to replace disposable shrink wrapping in our warehouses. By switching to CAM Buckle Pallet Straps, we’ve cut down our annual plastic wrapping consumption by over 80%, or 5,000 kg, which helps us avoid emitting over 3 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually. We have the capability to reclaim approximately 1,500 metric tonnes of acetonitrile at a purity of 99%. This process not only eliminates the requirement for a fresh batch of solvent but also enables us to mitigate around 0.9 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions annually.

Safeguarding Biodiversity

Biocon Malaysia acknowledges the significance of tree planting in enhancing tree coverage, mitigating air and water pollution, and fostering biodiversity to bolster ecosystem well-being and essential ecosystem services. In the fiscal year 2024, Biocon Malaysia successfully planted 1,000 trees as a proactive initiative to combat carbon emissions and revitalise natural habitats. These trees have been strategically positioned on both the company premises and in external areas to amplify their environmental benefits.

Through our Biologics Woodlands project, which aims to plant one tree per employee annually, we aspire to eventually cultivate a forest, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
