At the heart of this commitment is the Sustainability Gallery at Petrosains, The Discovery Centre. Through immersive, hands-on experiences, the gallery transforms complex environmental challenges into relatable learning journeys, encouraging visitors to explore sustainability through the lens of science, technology and innovation.
Across six interactive zones, visitors discover how everyday choices influence their environmental footprint. From sustainable homes and responsible food consumption to future mobility, renewable energy and Net Zero aspirations, the gallery demonstrates how individual actions can collectively create meaningful impact.
Visitors can learn how innovative farming technologies support food security, explore emerging low-carbon solutions and gain a deeper understanding of global issues such as climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and the Paris Agreement. Most importantly, they leave with a clearer understanding that sustainability is not the responsibility of governments and industries alone. It is a shared responsibility that begins with each of us.
Yet Petrosains’ commitment to sustainability extends far beyond the walls of its iconic Discovery Centre. Recognising the importance of reaching communities beyond major urban centres, Petrosains continues to expand access to sustainability-focused STEM learning through its network of satellite centres and community learning spaces across the country.
One such example is Petrosains PlayFarm in Johor Bahru, located within the Johor Public Library Corporation (PPAJ), alongside Petrosains PlaySmart Johor Bahru and the Maker Studio. Serving as a unique community learning hub, Petrosains PlayFarm brings sustainability concepts to life through real-world applications that visitors can experience firsthand.
Since opening to the public, the attraction has welcomed thousands of visitors, reflecting growing interest in sustainability and environmental stewardship among families and local communities. At Petrosains PlayFarm, visitors can explore aquaponics systems, wicking beds, food forests and other innovative urban farming solutions designed to maximise resources while minimising environmental impact.
IoT-enabled displays allow visitors to monitor real-time environmental data, including temperature, humidity, soil conditions and water quality, demonstrating how technology can support sustainable food production. Hands-on experiences such as composting, upcycling and food waste management further encourage visitors to adopt environmentally conscious habits in their daily lives.
