In 2025, the All Women’s Action Society (AWAM) proudly celebrates 40 years of action. Since its founding in 1985, AWAM has been at the forefront of the movement to end gender-based violence (GBV) and champion gender equality in Malaysia. To commemorate this milestone, AWAM launched its 40th anniversary fundraising campaign, “40-Year Journey: A Canvas of Change”, to sustain and expand its critical work in transforming lives and shaping a more just and equitable society.
Over the past four decades, AWAM has played a pivotal role in driving legislative and institutional reform, from the enactment of the Domestic Violence Act (1994) and Anti-Sexual Harassment Act (2022), to the establishment of One Stop Crisis Centres in government hospitals. Its Telenita Helpline has also offered free counselling and legal information to more than 15,000 individuals.
AWAM’s impact extends beyond direct services. The organisation leads public education, corporate training and grassroots outreach across Malaysia, while also influencing public discourse through its strong media presence, with over 138 features in 2024 and a growing online community of more than 51,000 followers.
As AWAM celebrates 40 years of change, it calls on the public to stand in solidarity. Contributions to “A Canvas of Change” will help AWAM sustain its advocacy, expand their services, and continue building a Malaysia where everyone, regardless of gender, is free from violence and discrimination.
