Restoring Nature’s Beauty: Kao Penang Group’s Biodiversity Conservation Initiative

Oct 8, 2024 | CSR Stories

In recent years, biodiversity has become a major topic in the global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) circles, playing a key role in creating a more sustainable environment. Kao Corporation Japan has made significant efforts to contribute to biodiversity conservation and regeneration. In line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainability, Kao is committed to working alongside customers, business partners, and society to conserve and restore biodiversity and take actions that lead to the regeneration of nature.

Kao Penang Group (KPG), located in the Prai industrial area, consists of four companies: Fatty Chemical Malaysia, Kao Oleochemical Malaysia, Kao Plasticizer Malaysia, and Kao Soap Malaysia. In conjunction with World Environment Day 2024, KPG launched a biodiversity program at Songsong Island, Kedah, on 29th June 2024. The program, organized in collaboration with an NGO and supported by the Department of Environment, the Department of Fisheries, and the Department of Forestry, was attended by nearly 120 company employees, their family members, and neighborhood residents from Kampung Jawa.

Songsong Island is one of Kedah’s most attractive tourist spots. However, its natural beauty had been severely impacted, with rubbish and plastics scattered around and damaged facilities. This program aimed to tackle the depletion of coral reefs and coastal pollution by promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness about marine and environmental conservation among the employees. Additionally, the program included the planting of ‘Merambung’ trees to attract more turtles to lay eggs on the island.

The event began with a short speech by Puan Fatin Atiqah, a representative from Kedah’s Department of Forestry, followed by Cik Puan Sharifah Zakiah binti Syed Sahab, Director of the Kedah Department of Environment (DOE). Mr. Nakai Kiyotaka, Managing Director of Kao Penang Group, then delivered a speech on the importance of maintaining environmental sustainability. “In these beautiful natural surroundings, we carried out tasks such as beach cleaning, tree planting, building painting, and coral propagation. It was a truly wonderful event where KPG members, government officials, and Kedah representatives worked together with a strong sense of unity. Moving forward, we aim to continue developing KPG’s ESG activities to address societal issues and enhance KPG’s presence in Malaysia,” said Mr. Nakai.

Participants were divided into groups to engage in various activities, including:

1. Merambung tree planting: Trees were planted along the beach to attract more turtles to lay eggs.

2. Beach Cleaning: Participants collected rubbish along the beach, sorting it into recyclable and general waste.

3. Coral Propagation: This activity aimed to promote coral reef growth. Using two seabed nurseries made of concrete and galvanized structures, participants tied coral branches to the racks to encourage reef restoration.

4. Refurbishing Facilities: Participants also refurbished facilities and painted walls to improve the experience for visitors.

Kao Penang Group remains committed to actively participating in biodiversity conservation efforts, supporting the broader goal of achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
