Bumi Armada Berhad collaborated with the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (Pahang) for the Turtle Conservation Awareness and Nesting Site Monitoring Programme.
The initiative was designed to strengthen efforts in protecting Malaysia’s turtle population through hands-on conservation activities. These included revisiting hatched nests, assessing hatching success rates, removing unhatched eggs and deceased hatchlings and mitigating fungal growth to maintain a healthy nesting environment.
In support of marine conservation advancement, Bumi Armada Berhad also sponsored a satellite tracking device to be fitted on a nesting female turtle. This technology allows researchers to monitor the turtle’s migratory routes and habitat usage, contributing valuable data for long-term conservation planning and evidence-based protection strategies. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 14: Life Below Water and SDG 15: Life on Land.
Ongoing conservation efforts have already shown encouraging results, with a noticeable increase in turtle landings for nesting, an encouraging indicator of the positive impact of sustained habitat protection and restoration initiatives.
