Giving priorities to the underprivileged and the underserved

Jan 8, 2021 | CSR Stories

Autrui Global is a social enterprise that was founded by a group of medical professionals in 2019, with the vision of creating a future with better health for everyone, everywhere. Speaking to CSR Malaysia, Dr Beh Wee Ren, one of the founding members of Autrui Global shares how they put their medical expertise to good use to help the poverty-stricken and underprivileged communities.

“Autrui Global started with just a few medical professionals and doctors. A few years ago, we started going to mission trips overseas on behalf of church. By going on these trips, it is more than just giving the communities we visited medical and dental care, but also moral support.” According to Dr Beh, Autrui will collaborate with locals in a particular area before commencing charity work.

Autrui’s charitable causes has proven successful as it has travel across many South East Asian countries, the furthest being India. “However, the place that we repeated to return to is the Philippines,” Dr Beh said in a Zoom interview with CSR Malaysia. It was only recently that Autrui started its charity work in Malaysia.

“At first I was skeptical about doing charity in Malaysia as there are many free clinics and cheap healthcare centres available in Malaysia. However, things are not as they turned out to be, especially in Sabah. There are many underprivileged and stateless people in Sabah and out of fear of being caught by authority, they do not seek help.” Dr Beh added that there has been many stereotypes surrounding the stateless, yet in line with Autrui’s believes, everyone deserves access to healthcare.

Autrui’s charity works was halted when the nation implemented Movement Control Order (MCO) due to the pandemic. “We were supposed to go to Tawau, but the plan went down the drain when MCO was implemented.” Instead of idling around, Autrui set to work immediately to help out however it could during the pandemic. “We sent out foods to Universiti Malaya Hospital, donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to hospitals and donated N95 masks. Considering we are new, we could not send out things in bulks, but it is at least enough to sustain the hospitals before the government steps in.” Dr Beh adds.

Autrui has recently taken over Klinik Kecheerian, which is located in Subang Jaya. The clinic was established in 2012 to help refugees and underserved communities. “We plan to build up the clinic again and all the proceeds will go towards subsidising the refugees, asylum seekers, poverty-stricken families and the B40 families. We want to do a sustainable charity and this project is something that is near and dear to us,” said Dr Beh. Besides that, Autrui has also launched ‘1000 Days’ programme, which aims to help mothers and their newborns as well as ‘Untuk Jiranku’, which are intended to help underserved communities in Sabah which are affected by the Covid-19.

We took over the clinic with the intention of helping people who are living paychecks by paychecks. These people who live off daily wages find it hard to go to government clinics as it requires them to take time off from work. However, if they took too many days off, they will be laid off. As such, this is the reason why we wanted to start a clinic that operates after working hours with an affordable price for them.”
