Sunway Healthcare Group launched its RM2.5 million Cancer Support Fund in October 2022, a significant initiative aimed at addressing the needs of cancer patients in Malaysia. This fund is part of Sunway Healthcare Group’s broader commitment to enhancing the well-being of the community and providing crucial support to those battling cancer.
Since its inception, the Cancer Support Fund has utilised RM1.7million for cancer screenings and subsidized treatments as of 2024. This substantial contribution has already made a significant impact, with 900 individuals receiving free cancer screenings and over 200 patients receiving subsidized treatments.
Early detection is essential in ensuring timely, life-saving treatment. In 2020, Malaysia reported 48,639 new cancer cases , with 64.1% of these cases diagnosed at stages three and four. Recognizing this, Sunway Healthcare Group emphasises the importance of prevention, early detection, and education as key strategies in the fight against cancer. The top four cancer screenings provided were for breast, colorectal, lung, and cervical cancers, highlighting the focus on early detection and prevention of the most common types of cancer.
As part of the Cancer Support Fund, beneficiaries receive discounted rates for chemotherapy, radiotherapy, stem cell transplants, CAR T-Cell therapy, and targeted radionuclide therapy. These treatments, which are often financially burdensome, are now more accessible to those in need, thanks to the fund.
To ensure patients receive the most effective treatment plans, Sunway Healthcare Group has established a multidisciplinary board comprising surgeons, physicians, oncologists, radiologists, hematologists, gynecologists, medical physicists, and pathologists. This board reviews complex cases to provide tailored treatment plans, leveraging the latest state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic technologies available at the Sunway Cancer Centre. This one-stop center offers comprehensive care, ensuring patients have access to the best possible resources under one roof.
In addition to medical treatment, Sunway Healthcare Group understands the importance of emotional support for cancer patients. The Cancer Buddy Programme pairs cancer survivors with patients currently undergoing treatment, providing a valuable support system based on shared experiences and understanding.
