MALAYSIA’S OUTSTANDING CORPORATIONS IN SUSTAINABILITY AND CSR INITIATIVES HONOURED

‘CSR Malaysia’ publication today revealed its awards list of outstanding Malaysian corporations that have excelled tremendously in the corporate sustainability and social responsibility arena in boosting the socio-economic transformation of Malaysia.T

This year, CSR Malaysia honoured some 41 Malaysian corporations as its award recipients which are selected by a panel of high caliber judges representing corporate and social bodies. This annual initiative is a platform to celebrate outstanding achievers and inspiring corporations for their efforts to create a better Malaysia through their sustainability and corporate social responsibility endeavours.

Heading the 2020 awards list are Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd, Kumpulan Perangsang Selangor Berhad, and Bank Rakyat for their overall excellence. TNB, the country’s largest electricity company, has among its outreach initiatives, the uplifting of the lives of the underprivileged, the promoting of equal access to quality education and the developing of the country’s sporting talents. Gerbang Alaf is the operator of McDonald’s restaurants has spent some RM35 million in the year 2019 for its multiple and varied CSR programmes. Kumpulan Perangsang, a manufacturing and trading company showcased overall excellence in its entrepreneurship and community development programmes. Bank Rakyat was also honoured for overall excellence for the financial institution category.

Other award recipients for the year 2020 include Sunway Group, Mah Sing Group Berhad, Flex Penang and Flex Johor, Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad, Swissen Trading and Transport, Picoms International University College, RHB Banking Group, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Hektar Property Services and Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad.

Great Eastern Life Assurance was honoured for uplifting underprivileged Malaysian children. Other companies that have made it to the 2020 awards list are Kenanga Investment Bank, Getha (1969) Sdn Bhd, 7-Eleven Malaysia, Kwantas Corporation Berhad, Canon Marketing Malaysia, Heineken Malaysia Berhad, Federal Express Services, Homevest Capital and Al-Ikhsan Sports.

Malaysia’s leading pharmaceutical group Pharmaniaga Berhad together with Celcom Axiata Berhad, WCT Holdings Berhad, Micron Semiconductor Malaysia, Manulife Holdings Berhad, Mondelez International Malaysia, BE International Marketing, Smart SF, Serba Dinamik Holdings Berhad, ABM Fujiya Berhad, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Golden Pharos Berhad, E-Idaman, PMB Investment Berhad, Warisan TC Holdings Berhad, KPMG and Sri Ternak Group of Companies also made it to the honours list.

According the Datuk R. Rajendran, CSR Malaysia Chairman, more often than not, the focus on recognition for sustainability and CSR excellence has not been sufficient. It must be remembered that private sector companies are the driving force of the nation’s economy and they are well placed to carry out meaningful and significant CSR activities.

‘CSR Malaysia’ also listed 5 foundations and social enterprises that have excelled in charity works that were carried out in 2019. They included LeapEd Services Sdn Bhd, Great Heart Charity, Yayasan Pahang, Ronald McDonald House Charities Malaysia, and Yayasan Bank Rakyat.

Among the judging criteria for the Sustainability and CSR Malaysia Awards are clear purpose and goals of the company for the CSR initiative, the impact created and frequency of CSR events held.

Lee Seng Chee, the Managing Editor and Co-Chairman of CSR Malaysia said that Corporate Malaysia’s aspirations should always go beyond mere profits or building world class buildings or infrastructures. He added that corporations and organizations will need to promote sustainable economies by helping marginalized communities and making environmental efforts to preserve our heritage for future generations.

The annual Sustainability and CSR Malaysia Awards is a joint project by CSR Malaysia and Pertubuhan Amal Tanggungjawab Kemapanan Dan Korporat Malaysia.
