The home improvement retailer, MR D.I.Y. showed its love for the deaf & mute community during this Hari Raya through its ‘Kerana Azman’ web film, which had garnered overwhelming response by Malaysians with a total number of 2,780 shares on social media. Under the “You Share, We Donate” campaign, the number of shares gathered from 30th April to 17th May 2021 was translated to a total amount of RM2,780 contributed by the retailer to the Malaysian Federation of Deaf (MFD).
The 4-minute web film was posted on MR. D.I.Y.’s official Facebook page during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period. The film was inspired by a story of a little boy, Azman who is deaf and mute. Despite his condition, he has selflessly helped the needy by collecting and selling recycling items to purchase food for them. Yusuf, the founder of Yayasan Azman, has been a childhood friend of Azman, founded the NGO in commemoration of Azman’s act of selflessness and kindness with a belief in giving back to society. The contribution channelled to the MFD was in the form of MR. D.I.Y. cash vouchers through a handover ceremony conducted on Thursday, 20 May 2021.
“This is MR D.I.Y.’s third time incorporating CSR in web films, which serve a purpose of reminding Malaysians to think about the underprivileged community during this festive season. It is like our tradition to produce a meaningful story like ‘Kerana Azman’ that relates to the underprivileged community so that they are not forgotten and neglected,” said Andy Chin, Vice President of Marketing, MR D.I.Y Group.
“The differently-abled community makes up an integral part of business operations within MR D.I.Y. We appreciate their dedication and always strive to offer them equal opportunities. In our eyes, they are excellent, capable, just like our other employees. We thank Malaysians for showing their love and support by sharing our Raya web film that featured the deaf & mute community. Our contribution to MFD will hopefully enable us to support its social enterprise initiative, and help them to get the supplies that they require from MR D.I.Y. while generating income for the organization. MR D.I.Y. will continue to appreciate our differently-abled friends and offer our help within our best effort,” added Chin.
MFD is an authorized NGO under the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) Malaysia. Established in 1997, MFD has been playing a role in developing the deaf & mute community at a national level, by offering early childhood education to deaf & mute children, social enterprises, job-readiness training to working adults, etc. To minimise the gap between the deaf & mute community and the society, MFD also offers sign language training and interpreter services to the public. MFD currently runs a cafe under social enterprise to generate income for the deaf & mute community at Level 3A, Staircase 3, Menara KLH that is fully managed by deaf & mute personnel.
Prior to this MR D.I.Y. had also produced 2 other web films during the Chinese New Year festival and Christmas season in 2020 under the same campaign “‘You Share, We Donate”. Both initiatives have raised a total amount of RM7,130 and RM4,220 for the Green Pastures Senior Life Home and the Malaysia Relief Agency (MRA) respectively.
