Earth Hour has been observed worldwide on the last Saturday of March at 8:30 p.m. local time, growing from the 2007 lights-off event in Sydney. As WWF’s flagship event, it is a symbolic act of solidarity where millions of people, communities, and iconic landmarks, from the twin towers in Kuala Lumpur to the Eiffel Tower, switch off their lights for 60 minutes to show support for the planet and raise awareness of environmental issues. Earth Hour moves beyond reports and debates into tangible participatory movements that underscore the critical urgency of climate change. Our planet has warmed 1.1°C since pre-industrial levels and is on course to exceed the 1.5°C limit by 2030. Ultimately, this “lights off” hour is more than a movement; it is the collective action of millions standing together for a better future.
WWF-Malaysia’s Earth Hour campaign, which began in 2009, has evolved from its foundational symbolic lights-off event into a multifaceted movement. What started as a single hour of darkness has since grown far beyond the annual lights-out at iconic buildings, expanding into long-term partnerships with city councils and state governments to secure green pledges, while sustaining public engagement through activities such as night walks, virtual runs, and educational booths. The initiative has progressively expanded its scope from climate awareness to themes of biodiversity, sustainable lifestyles, and youth empowerment.

Earth Hour has also come into its own in the last 20 years to be an invitation into quiet stewardship. Many of WWF-Malaysia’s long-term conservation efforts including forest restoration, marine ecosystem protection and the empowerment of local communities, are sustained by individuals who choose to walk alongside us. This quiet stewardship offers a moment to reflect on how personal values, influence, and legacy can support nature in meaningful, enduring ways long after the lights come back on.
Remember, many things can happen in an hour to bring about change for the year, so join us in celebrating Earth Hour on 28 March 2026 by giving an hour to Earth. Switch off non-essential lights from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm to show our commitment to protecting forests and seas, as well as safeguarding our wellbeing for a sustainable future

If your company would like to support Earth Hour by switching off your building’s lights, please email your company details as well as photos of your building before and during lights off to contactus@wwf.org.my by Friday, 10 April 2026. Participating companies will be featured in our ‘Earth Hour 2026 Thank You Report’, to be published on 22 May 2026 in conjunction with International Day for Biological Diversity.
