Yayasan Johor Corporation continues to strengthen marine conservation efforts in Johor through an integrated ecosystem-based approach that recognises the natural connectivity between coral reefs, seagrass meadows and coastal communities. Under its Environment pillar, Yayasan JCorp’s marine initiatives focus on restoring critical underwater habitats, enhancing biodiversity and fostering long-term stewardship of Johor’s marine ecosystems.

Restoring Interconnected Marine Habitats
Since 2023, Yayasan JCorp has been actively rehabilitating coral reef ecosystems at Pulau Aur to restore damaged reef structures and revive marine biodiversity. To date, 250 coral fragments have been successfully transplanted, including 200 new fragments in 2025. Ongoing monitoring indicates healthy coral growth exceeding two centimetres, with rehabilitated areas now supporting diverse marine life, including angelfish, anemonefish and other reef-dependent species.
These reefs play a crucial role within a wider marine system, providing shelter, breeding grounds and food sources that are closely linked to nearby seagrass meadows and coastal waters. The programme also integrates sustainable innovation through the use of recycled glass bottles as coral planting bases, transforming waste materials into functional tools for ecosystem restoration.
Strengthening Seagrass Ecosystems as Part of Marine Resilience
Recognising the ecological link between coral reefs and seagrass meadows, Yayasan JCorp expanded its marine conservation efforts to include seagrass ecosystems through the Seagrass Ecotourism Experience in Mersing on 1 and 2 July 2025. Seagrass meadows are essential to marine resilience, serving as nurseries for juvenile fish, stabilising coastlines, supporting fisheries and acting as significant carbon sinks.
At Pulau Setindan, participants explored seagrass habitats under the guidance of marine experts and local community leaders, gaining deeper insight into how healthy seagrass meadows support reef systems, coastal protection and sustainable livelihoods. This experiential approach reinforces understanding that marine conservation must address the ecosystem as a whole rather than individual habitats in isolation.

Building Stewardship Through Ecosystem Awareness
Yayasan JCorp’s marine conservation initiatives are designed to cultivate awareness, stewardship and practical conservation knowledge among volunteers, researchers, tourism players and local authorities. By engaging stakeholders directly within reef and seagrass environments, the programmes strengthen collective responsibility for protecting Johor’s marine heritage.
These efforts also support Johor’s positioning for Tahun Melawat Malaysia 2026 and Tahun Melawat Johor 2026 by highlighting Mersing as a destination for responsible marine ecotourism, education and ecosystem-based learning.
A Long-Term Commitment to Johor’s Marine Ecosystem
Through continuous coral rehabilitation, seagrass ecosystem protection and community-based engagement, Yayasan JCorp is advancing a holistic and long-term marine conservation strategy. By safeguarding the natural connections between reefs, seagrass meadows and coastal communities, these initiatives help ensure Johor’s marine ecosystems remain resilient, productive and capable of supporting biodiversity and livelihoods for generations to come.
