LUNAS: Pioneering Sustainability Through Green Initiatives

Dec 16, 2024 | CSR Stories

At Lumut Naval Shipyard (LUNAS), sustainability serves as a core value driving the vision for a greener future. In line with Malaysia’s efforts to achieve net zero carbon by 2050, LUNAS has integrated sustainable practices into its business model, achieving significant milestones in the process. A notable example is its participation in the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) program, initiated by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

Certificate of Achievement presented to Lumut Naval Shipyard from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for participating in the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) initiative.

In February 2023, LUNAS subscribed to Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) under the GET program, enabling the redemption of 1,611.501 MWh of electricity generated from renewable sources. This initiative has been crucial in reducing the company’s carbon footprint by offsetting approximately 1,221.518 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. This proactive decision reflects LUNAS’s goal to inspire the maritime industry to adopt sustainable practices that reduce environmental impact. Its participation in the GET program highlights how LUNAS integrates renewable energy into its operations.

In June 2024, LUNAS received formal recognition from TNB Perak during the Customer Appreciation Negeri Perak 2024 event at Weil Hotel Ipoh. Receiving a Certificate of Achievement for its involvement in the GET program, this acknowledgment highlighted LUNAS’s commitment to green initiatives in partnership with TNB. The event emphasised the shared mission to promote environmental sustainability. Following the recognition ceremony, LUNAS and TNB held discussions on further green energy initiatives, particularly the installation of solar panels at LUNAS facilities. This forward-looking collaboration underscores its ongoing commitment to operational sustainability, reinforcing its leadership in green practices within the maritime sector.

In addition, LUNAS has taken further steps to promote sustainability through resource repurposing. The company recently donated used garnet, an industrial byproduct, to Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). This donation reduced waste by giving the garnet a second life, allowing UMP to use it as a resource while supporting a circular economy. By diverting materials from disposal, LUNAS minimises its environmental footprint and promotes greener industry practices. As the company continues its sustainability journey, LUNAS remains dedicated to expanding its green efforts. LUNAS’s participation in the GET program which was recognised by TNB, marks an early but significant step toward contributing to the nation’s net zero pledge and blue economy.

LUNAS recognises that the responsibility to the environment goes beyond immediate operations. By actively engaging in renewable energy and repurposing initiatives, the company sets a new benchmark for sustainability. LUNAS’s dedication to reducing waste, lowering emissions and using green energy will continue to guide its efforts toward a greener future for the maritime industry.
