Shills Beauty Sdn Bhd – the official distributor for Yuka Zan – is donating 152,000 pieces of its medical-grade face masks worth RM106,400 to the disabled communities amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Yuka Zan which has been conducting various CSR initiatives previously, has donated the face masks to the OKU Sentral today.

On hand to receive the donation at her office at the Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga & Masyarakat (KPWKM) was YB Senator Datuk Ras Adiba, President and co-founder of OKU Sentral. Datuk Ras has been passionately advocating the cause and welfare of Person with Disabilities (PWD) in Malaysia and be the voice for the special community in the Parliament.

In spite of the commencement of the vaccination roll-out which will take time in achieving the necessary mass immunity, items of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as medical grade mask remains an essential health protective item.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), 15% of the world’s population makes up the disabled community. In Malaysia, the total registered number of OKUs with JKM are around 590,000 people although there are at least 4.7 million of the population belong to the OKU community with a varied range of disabilities.

According to the Department of Social Welfare, Malaysia (JKM), Person with Disability (PWD) in physical category recorded the highest number at 35.2%, followed by learning disability category at 34.8%, visually impaired at 8.9% and the lowest number at 0.5% for speech impairment.  The prevalence of disability among the population in Malaysia is expected to be high with the percentage of population aged 65 years and above forecasted to increase significantly from 5% in 2010 to 14.5% in 2040.

Datuk Ras echoed by stating the number of physical disabilities stand at 216,036 people, followed by learning disability at 203,753, hearing impairment at 52,583 as the top 3 disabilities amongst Malaysian OKUs.

Ms Joen See, General Manager of Shills Beauty explained, “We believe that happiness starts with good self-care and health. The reason why Yuka Zan face masks come in a repertoire of vibrant colours with various cute print designs such as little dinosaurs and adorable kitties and unicorns, is meant to bring joy and smile to the faces of those wearing them while ensuring their safety. Yuka Zan will continue its contributions to other charity organizations and NGOs in the next couple of months.”

YB Senator Datuk Ras Adiba added that the lack of proper outreach and weak registration enforcement makes it difficult for proper assistance to be provided to the OKU community. “Therefore, aids and donation assistance such as these colorful & cheery-looking Yuka Zan masks will go a long way in helping out as we always believe that no one should be left behind, especially in the area of self-protection in times of pandemic,” said Datuk Ras Adiba.

OKU Sentral is committed to carrying out its “ACE” philosophy – which advocates “Activities, Career and Education” for the OKUs. “There is a still a lot of stigma associated with OKUs that leads to isolation and discrimination. We are committed to creating more public awareness, empowering disabled people and looking into various avenues to provide aid and welfare for this community,” said Datuk Ras.

Datuk Ras concluded to urge all persons with disabilities who have yet to register with Social Welfare Department to do so to ensure they are included in the National Covid 19 Immunisation Programme.
