Empowering Terengganu’s Underprivileged Youth: TDM Supports TUNAS Scholar Programme

Jan 20, 2025 | CSR Stories

Demonstrating their commitment to social responsibility and community empowerment, TDM Berhad (“TDM” or “Group”) and Kumpulan Medic Iman Sdn. Bhd. (“KMI Healthcare”), through Terengganu Inc have partnered with Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Melayu Terengganu (MAIDAM) to support the transformative TUNAS Scholar Programme. This programme aims to uplift asnaf youth—young individuals eligible for aid through Islamic social welfare programmes— in Terengganu by offering fully funded scholarships for the Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Physiotherapy. It provides these young individuals with a valuable opportunity to advance their education and create a better future for themselves and their families, which supports UNSDGs Goal 4: Quality Education by offering fully funded scholarships to asnaf youth in Terengganu for Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Physiotherapy at University College Bestari. By opening access to higher education, it ensures that underprivileged youth receive the skills and training needed to build a brighter future for themselves and their families.

In its first cohort, the TUNAS Scholar Programme successfully sponsored 12 students to attend University College Bestari, where they embarked on a rigorous three-year programme in Nursing or Physiotherapy. By opening pathways to higher education, TUNAS Scholar provides asnaf youth with access to quality education and healthcare training, empowering them with skills that will lead to meaningful employment. Upon completion of their studies, these students will have the opportunity to work at one of KMI Healthcare’s network of hospitals, with a minimum salary of RM3,000, including allowances.

The TUNAS Scholar Programme offers comprehensive full sponsorship, covering:

  1. Tuition Fees: All academic fees for the duration of the programme.
  2. Accommodation Fees: Inclusive of hostel and boarding fees.
  3. Monthly Allowance: A stipend to support daily living expenses.
  4. Uniform Fees: Coverage of all required uniform costs.

This full sponsorship aims to support students throughout their studies, easing financial burdens and ensuring they can focus on achieving academic success.

TDM and KMI Healthcare are proud to be actively involved in this impactful programme, which goes beyond financial aid to foster a supportive environment for learning and personal growth. By investing in the education of asnaf youth, TDM is helping to address socio-economic inequalities in the region. This CSR initiative also represents a broader commitment to building a skilled healthcare workforce from within the local population.

The TUNAS Scholar Programme aligns with the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals in Terengganu. As the graduates join the KMI Healthcare network, they bring not only fresh knowledge and skills but also a deep connection to their communities, enriching the healthcare services offered at these institutions.

As TDM and KMI Healthcare continue to support initiatives like TUNAS Scholar, they remain focused on the broader goal of improving lives through accessible education, empowerment, and sustainable community development. This vision for a brighter, more inclusive future embodies TDM’s mission, inspiring the next generation to dream, achieve and lead.
